Image Shalyn Diaz Geneva County Sheriff's OfficeAn Alabama woman plead guilty to attempted murder after being accused of the kidnapping and stabbing of a man. Shalyn Diaz lured Matthew Angelino to a fake date back in January. She has entered a guilty plea the day her trial was set to begin in June.
Diaz was fined $1,000 and given a ten-year jail sentence by Judge William Filmore. At a hearing set for August 14, her attorneys will present their case for a reduced sentence.
Diaz and her co-conspirator, Robert Lane Hall, were arrested in January 2024 for the incident. The Geneva County Sheriff's Office claims that Diaz lured Angelino on a fictitious date which was planned over Facebook Messenger.
The two met on January 7 and drove around the rural roads of Geneva while Hall hid in the trunk of the car. Investigator Cory Dean said Diaz persuaded Angelino to put on a blindfold and handcuffs. Then Hall came out of the trunk and began to choke Angelino with a cord and stabbing him with a knife. Angelino was reportedly stabbed 19 times.
The victim was pulled to the side of the road left to die, according to Investigator Dean. Angelino was found alive by a passing motorist on Holmes Creek Road still wearing handcuffs with the cord over his neck.
Hall was given a life sentence after entering a guilty plea to the same allegation earlier this month. Sheriff Tony Helms of Geneva County said that Hall's lengthy criminal record across two Alabama counties was the reason for the harshness of his sentence.
