A dismembered body in New York shocks residents as police investigate body parts found in a Bronx apartment and a burning shopping cart in Yonkers. Learn about this developing case and the ongoing investigation.New York law enforcement agencies launched a major investigation after the gruesome discovery of dismembered human remains across two locations. The case, initially uncovered in Yonkers, has now expanded to the Bronx, prompting the New York Police Department to take the lead in the inquiry.
Yonkers Police Department said in a statement that police received a call about a fire under a bridge near Mount Vernon August 5. Upon extinguishing the flames, officers from the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Police discovered a "lifeless body" in a shopping cart on the sidewalk.
Police officials believe someone set fire to the body at the location where it was found. As they investigated further, they determined the NYPD should take over since Yonkers was only the "dump site."
News reports suggest police believe that the victim, who has not been publicly identified, was murdered in a Bronx apartment, stuffed in a shopping cart, and transported to Yonkers by train.
The outlet also said that authorities were facing challenges in the identification process, which slowed down since the body was missing its hands, feet, and teeth after being dismembered.
The NYPD obtained a search warrant and raided a Bronx location on August 6, where they found more human parts in the kitchen. Police informed PEOPLE about it but didn't confirm if it was related to the Yonkers body.
The NYPD is still investigating, but no arrests have been made yet.
